Together
Yet seemingly apart
The thoughts of an adolescent mind.
So strange and lonely
Can the dark halls feel
As we search to find ourselves.
Thoughts jumbled
In a dance we can’t control.
Struggling for both uniqueness
And understanding.
Within these teenage years
So much is learned:
Often in the hardest of ways.
Torn together are we,
So confused in our ways.
How, I wonder, can it be
That we miss the similarities within each other.
We dwell alone within the shadows
Hiding as much as we can
From the world.
In such ways are prisons formed.
No barriers
That we do not place ourselves:
Defense from great harm.
Daring,
Yet afraid
Striving to be interesting
within conformity.
Unsure of ourselves,
And Isolation usual
We sink deeper and deeper
Within ourselves.
Torn together are we,
Similar emotions,
Similar dreams.
We look beyond ourselves
Long enough to see
There aren’t so many differences between you
and me.
